This strip in particular is where I decided these “Y”-shaped layouts don’t really work, and stopped using them after the QUAGMIRE storyline. It’s a little too ambiguous if you’re supposed to read the left panel or the top panel first (it’s the top one), and rule #1 in sequential storytelling is to make the story as easy to follow for the reader as possible.
