After the first year and change of the original Hawk & Croc comics, Brandon and I did a story that showed the characters during their days in High School. That was a much more slice-of-life era of the comic, and while I think we had a lot of fun with it, we never really had a clear plan of what we were going to do.
So I had another idea: What about COLLEGE?
I wrote an outline for the first 70 strips, which turned Hawk & Croc into a sex comedy, and did up a few early comics as a proof of concept.
We were going to have a gag that Croc got a Neo Geo Pocket Color portable gaming system just before college, and he would just ALWAYS be playing it, no matter the circumstances going on around him. Every so often, Biff would tell the other two guys about whatever sexual conquest he had. Beth would be in the girls’ wing of the dorm, so she’d still be around and a major character.
The first comic doesn’t have any dialogue, but it would be similar to the very first H&C strip, or the first School Daze strip. “Can recent high school graduates Dariaan Nighthawk and Alan “Croc” Devane deal with the pressures… of living together in a college dormitory?…. (Hawk burps. Croc says “Nice one.”) Well, anything’s possible.”
Of all the unused H&C content, I think this is the one I’d like to go back and actually do, someday. After re-reading the outline, it would need to be pretty heavily updated. But I think there’s something to this concept.
